Overview
Water & Air conducted cultural resources assessments on more than 54,000 acres in south and central Florida. The sites were evaluated as part of the Natural Resources Conservation Service Wetland Reserve Program that places conservation easements on agricultural lands and provides opportunities for restoration of former wetland resources.
Task Summary
- Conducted thirty four (34) cultural resource assessments.
- Covered more than 54,000 acres in south and central Florida counties that included Polk, Manatee, Highlands, Okeechobee, Hendry, St. Lucie, and Seminole.
- Recorded five (5) sites of significance in the State of Florida Master Site File.
Results
Most potential wetland reserve properties contained few cultural resources of significance. However several sites, identified during the CRA, required recording of historical/archeological sites with the Florida Department of State Master Site Files form. This work helped ensure preservation of the state’s cultural resources, documented site locations and type of resources, and considered protection strategies in the wetland restoration planning process.
